The Chevrolet Camaro holds its own in the sports car arena, and the 2012 model makes no exception. Currently available this year in six trim levels-1LS, 2LS, 1LT, 2LT, 1SS and 2SS-as well as the ZL1 trim that will be released spring 2012, the LS and LT trims for the 2012 Chevrolet Camaro come standard with a 3.6L V6 engine with Direct Injection and Variable Valve Timing that produces 323 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque. The 1LS, 1LT and 2LT trims come standard with 6-speed manual transmission. The 2LS comes standard with a 6-speed automatic transmission with overdrive and steering wheel-mounted TAPshift controls. Of these four, only the 1LT and 2LT trims offer the option to switch to the 6-speed automatic transmission. Fuel economy for the manual comes to 17/city, 28/highway, 20/combined MPG, while the automatic produces 19/city, 30/highway, 22/combined MPG.

Upgraded 1SS and 2SS trims come equipped with a 6.2L V8 engine that produce 426 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque using the standard 6-speed manual transmission, while the optional six-speed automatic transmission creates 400 horsepower and 410 pound-feet or torque. Fuel economy for these trims ranges from 16/city, 24/hwy, 19/combined with the manual transmission to 15/city, 24/hwy, 18/combined with the automatic transmission. The forthcoming ZL1 will contain a 6.2L Gen IV V8 engine with a small super charged block paired and a standard Tremec TR6060 6-speed manual transmission that produces a whopping 550 horsepower and 550 pound-feet of torque.

Standard Features & Options

The 2012 Chevrolet Camaro sees updates to its interior trim and electronics. Standard with the base trim are single-zone manual air conditioning, Bluetooth wireless technology for select phones, auxiliary audio input jack, power-programmable door locks with lockout protection, power windows, Driver Information Center (DIC), front reading and dome lamps, OnStar with Directions & Connections for six months, two auxiliary 12-volt outlets, remote keyless entry, variable ratio power steering, steering wheel-mounted audio and cruise controls, an AM/FM stereo with CD player and MP3 playback, music navigator and Graphic Information Display that includes outside temperature display, SiriusXM Satellite Radio with three-month trial, and 18-inch steel wheels.

Further upgrades begin with LT trims and include an available convertible build for this trim and all higher. Beyond these upgrades, the top-of-the-line 2LT and 2SS feature many upgrades and package advances that, in most cases, come optional for the 1LT and 1SS (and sometimes lower trims). These upgrades include the Rear Vision Package (Rear vision camera, inside rearview auto-dimming mirror with rearview camera display and rear park assist), remote vehicle starter on automatic builds, USB port, a Boston Acoustics premium 245-watt sound system, and the Convenience and Connectivity Package (Preferred Device Interface Module, USB port, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob (1LT), and remote vehicle starter system when available automatic transmission is ordered). Additional a la carte options are available on select trims including a power sunroof, as well as unique wheel choices.

Possibly the most unique options for the 2012 Camaro, Chevrolet has created three special edition models for this year. The 2012 Transformers Special Edition, which mimics Bumblebee from the movies and updates its 2010 predecessor, comes available on 2LT and 2SS trims. The 2012 Camaro 45th Anniversary Special Edition commemorates Chevy's 100-year anniversary, as well as Camaro's 45th. The 2012 Camaro Honor and Valor Model comes available solely to active duty military members with exclusive badging.
