Altavista, VA, near Midpoint Chevrolet Buick in Rocky Mount, VA

Midpoint Chevrolet Buick attracts customers from a number of communities surrounding Rocky Mount, VA, including the town of Altavista in Campbell County, the former longtime home of the Lane Company and their famous cedar chests.

Altavista is a small town of nearly 3,500 people. It was created in 1905 during the construction of the east-west Tidewater Railway between Giles County and Sewell's Point, and became incorporated in 1912. The Lane family was instrumental in the creation of the town and its history. Lane Brothers Construction Company was the contractor for a 32-mile stretch of the railway that crossed the existing north-south Southern Railway in Campbell County. Three Lane brothers purchased 2,000 acres at the point of the intersection, had civil engineers lay out a town plan, and encouraged settlement of the area by awarding free lots. The town takes its name from the Lane family farm in Albemarle County, VA.

The Lane Company came about in 1912 when John Lane purchased a box plant in Altavista and encouraged his son Ed to try his hand at starting a chest factory. Initially incorporated as the Standard Red Cedar Chest Company, the Lanes soon became renowned for their cedar chests, with no less of a celebrity spokesperson than Shirley Temple touting their product as "the gift that starts a home." The company expanded into occasional tables, case goods and accent pieces, then upholstered furniture with the purchase of Action Industries in 1972. The company headquarters were moved in 2001, and today the former Lane building is partially occupied by Central Virginia Community College and a number of new businesses.

Another notable Lane in Altavista's history was William G. Lane Sr., or "Uncle Billy," as most knew him. One of the town's earliest residents, he is recognized as the creator of the Altavista Trade Lot, held the first Saturday of each month, where livestock, crops and goods were bartered, traded and auctioned. "Uncle Billy" served as master auctioneer and provided the entertainment. The Trade Lot continues to operate on the first Saturday of each month as a flea market, and "Uncle Billy" is celebrated the first weekend of each June with a festival that includes a craft show, car show, children's games, pony rides, fireworks, music and other entertainment.
