Roanoke, the largest municipality in Southwest Virginia, was established in 1852 and chartered in 1874. The original name of the city was Big Lick, a title which resulted from the large quantities of salt - which formed a natural salt lick for wildlife - discovered in the Roanoke River. However, in 1882, the name was officially changed to Roanoke and soon after, it became an independent city. The area played a pivotal role in transportation during the Colonial era, and by the mid-19th century it became a major hub for many railroads, contributing to its rapid growth. Its location in a lush valley between Maryland and Tennessee, and its abundance of natural resources made it an ideal transportation hub. The city's early economy was largely based around the Norfolk and Western Railroad, and Norfolk Southern (as the railroad is now known) is a major employer in the area to this day.
