Salem also played a part in the Civil War, as it was the site of two Union attacks that damaged infrastructure and industry but resulted in few deaths. In addition, Salem's militia - the Salem Flying Artillery - claimed the last Confederate shot fired in the war before Robert E. Lee surrendered in nearby Appomattox Court House in Appomattox, VA.
Downtown, Salem's Main Street boasts many attractions on the National Register of Historic Places, including the post office, courthouse and renovated schools and manors. Salem is also home to the Salem Fair, an annual summer event that is the second largest in the state. Nearby lies the Natural Bridge of Virginia, carved out of history and 20 stories of solid rock.
Salem is also the home of Roanoke College, formerly the Virginia Collegiate Institute. Roanoke College is an esteemed private liberal arts college with more than 2,000 co-ed students. It is affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and competes in the NCAA Division III Old Dominion Athletic Conference. |
