Which 2024 Kia Sorento Powertrain Should I Choose?

2024 Kia Sorento Powertrains
The 2024 Kia Sorento has four powertrain options and each one offers a different set of benefits. Deciding which one is right for you depends on your driving needs and thefeatures that are most important to you. You can use the questions below to help you decide which option will match your lifestyle.
Kia Sorento Powertrain Options
Let’s start by exploring all four of the available options. The base engine is a gas-powered 191-horsepower 2.5-liter 4-cylinder that generates 181 lb-ft of torque. This option is married to a smooth shifting eight-speed transmission, has standard front-wheel drive (FWD), and optional all-wheel drive (AWD). The other options include
- Turbocharged Gas Engine: A 281-horsepower 2.4-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder that generated 311 lb-ft of torque that has the same transmission and drivetrain options as the base engine.
- Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV): This 227-horsepower setup consists of a 1.6-liter 4-cylinder gas engine and an electric motor. It is married to a six-speed transmission and is exclusively offered with FWD.
- Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV): A 261-horsepower setup that consists of a 1.6-liter 4-cylinder gas engine and a more powerful electric motor. The PHEV has the same transmission as the HEV but is exclusively offered with AWD.
Four Questions to Ask Before Choosing a Powertrain
- What is your budget? If the main factor for you is price, the base engine is the best option. Although it’s the most affordable powertrain, it’s a capable engine with plenty of power for driving around town and confident acceleration for merging and passing on the highway. It also has above-average fuel efficiency for the three-row SUV segment. If you can afford to bump up to a different engine, their pricing order for lowest to highest is the HEV, the turbocharged gas engine, and lastly, the PHEV.
- How important is fuel efficiency? Fuel is another big factor to consider when calculating the cost of ownership. While the PHEV has the highest starting MSRP, it will cut your monthly fuel costs in half. The HEV is the second most fuel-efficient powertrain. The more powerful turbocharged engine costs slightly more fuel than the base engine.
- How much does eco-friendliness matter to you? If going green is a big motivator for you, you’ll be most satisfied with a PHEV model. In electric-only driving mode, the PHEV doesn’t emit any tailpipe emissions.
- Do you have access to a charging station? To get the most out of a PHEV Sorento, you’ll need access to Level 1 or Level 2 charging. If you live in Lynchburg, VA, finding a place to recharge won’t be an issue, but if you’re in an area without readily available charging stations, the HEV Sorento or the Sportage Hybrid, Kia’s other electrified SUV might be a better option.
